Starting 1 November 2024, the NSW Government has announced a battery rebate program for residential and small businesses;

  • For a new battery installation

  • For a new battery installation connected to a VPP

  • For an addition to an existing battery that will be connected to a VPP

If eligible, you can save between $1600 to $2400 off the up-front installation costs of a battery depending on the size of the battery. In addition, you can save between $250 to $400 for connecting your household or business battery to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP).

What is a Virtual Power Plant (VPP)?

An agreement between you and your energy retailer ( Origin, AGL, Red Energy etc)

Once your battery is installed and commissioned, you agree to hand over full control of your battery to your selected retailer. They will tell your battery to discharge into the grid at times that the grid network is under stress and needs more energy to avoid a blackout. The rate that you will be paid for this energy is agreed prior to signing up with your retailer and is part of your new energy supply agreement with them.

The NSW battery rebate is made up of 2 parts;

1: A rebate amount is applied to the Battery installation.

2: A smaller payment for customers who opt in for the VPP plan with their retailer at the time of installation. Typically $300, and is paid to the customer at installation.

Joining a VPP with your retailer is optional at this stage, Solar Mad strongly recommends you research this decision and negotiate a fair price for energy removed from your battery by a retailer.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Use an approved supplier (SOLAR MAD) under the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme (PDRS)

  • Battery size must be between 2-28kWh capacity

  • Battery is on the Clean Energy Council (CEC) registered products list

  • In a residential or business setting

  • Have an existing solar system or have solar installed at the same time as the battery

  • Battery to have a 10yr min warranty

A second lower-value rebate is available where;

  • A new battery with the above criteria is connected to a VPP

  • Addition to an existing battery with the above criteria is connected to a VPP, providing a min of 6 years is left on the product warranty and meets the equipment requirements.

Can I receive an incentive for a battery that is already installed?

The installation incentive will only be available for new battery installation. The VPP participation incentive is available for additions to already-installed batteries as above
